SPF-Not Enough
The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) number is not a completely accurate determination of a sunscreen's capability of protecting the skin from the sun's harmful rays. SPF is only an indication of protection from the one wavelength of Ultraviolet light, the UVB (290nm*-320nm*). [*nm=nanometer, which is one billionth of a meter.] UVB is the cause of early skin redness experienced during initial sun exposure. Many physicians believe UVB to be less damaging to the skin, long term, compared to the UVA wavelength (320nm-400nm). UVA is responsible for skin tanning, and the long term pigmentation changes that are particularly harmful to the skin. Unfortunately there is not official rating system to date to measure a products' UVA protection.
UVA-Same Everyday...
UVA radiation, unlike UVB, is consistently the same all day long, all month long, and all year long. UVA rays present the same damaging effects to the skin in mid-December at 9am, as they do in mid July at 3pm. Deep penetrating UVA is consistently damaging, and in fact, enters deeper into the skin than UVB. UVA is believed by many physicians to be much more harmful than UVB. This is specifically why patients light sensitivity require daily, year round complete protection.
